Sanjusangendo is a temple in the Eastern part of Kyoto that contains an extensive collection of 1001 statues of the Kannon mercy bodhisattva. The name Sanjusangendo, translated into English as "Hall of 33 arches", is also associated with the goddess: the many – faced Kannon has 33 guises-which is reflected in the inner layout of the temple. Sanjusangendo is also the longest wooden building in Japan.
